The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a multi-part professional exam sponsored by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Physicians with an M.D. degree are required to pass this examination before being permitted to practice medicine in the United States of America. It includes three steps:
Step 1 assesses whether medical school students or graduates understand and can apply important concepts of the basic sciences to the practice of medicine.
Step 2 is designed to assess whether medical school students or graduates can apply medical knowledge, skills and understanding of clinical science essential for provision of patient care under supervision.
Step 3 is the final exam in the USMLE series designed to assess whether a medical school graduate can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine. Graduates of US medical schools typically take this exam at the end of the first year of residency.
Jiang is the first student of the Unviversity who ever sat the examination. Measured by the norm of the July, 2014 exam provided by the Wiki (with a passing score of 192, a mean of 228 and a SD of 21 or 16), Jiang's performance is better than 80-85% of all of the testees, including those from America and Canada. For a non-English native, the score of 246 is an index of the medical education and English teaching of the University.
